Abstract: This chapter gives a historic and contemporary overview of national urban policy in the UK, and critiques national urban policy initiatives implemented by central governments during the postwar period. The chapter provides a wider social, economic and political context for national urban policy and it outlines successive periods of national urban policy in the UK from the immediate postwar period until the start of the 2020s. Policy responses over a sequence of episodes of boom followed by slump followed by apparent recovery are discussed. The chapter focuses particularly on national urban policy in the last decade and into the 2020s, in the context of Brexit and during a period of seeming ‘post-urban policy’. The chapter finally gives an overall assessment of national urban policy in the UK from the 1960s to the 2020s in those places which have been ‘left behind’ socially and economically and require reindustrialising.
