Cooking to cope: an exploration of consumers' cooking practices amidst the COVID-19 pandemic
Year: 2021
Type: dissertation
Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic continues to have an enormous impact on consumers practices and behaviours. Even some of the most basic consumption practices such as eating and cooking were disrupted by the crisis. Contributing to the domain of consumer research, this thesis explores how the pandemic shapes consumers cooking practices as well as the underlying meanings they attribute to the practice. It is demonstrated how consumers actively use cooking practices as a coping strategy to deal with stressful and anxious emotions caused by the pandemic. As it turns out, consumers cook in order to cope with boredom, the struggles of social distancing, and a lack of creativity. Therefore, this thesis expands existing literature by identifying coping behaviour, social interaction, tradition, creativity, and boredom as meanings and motivations of cooking during times of crisis.
