Abstract: Fucoidans are sulfated polysaccharide rich in intercellular spaces of seaweeds. Brown seaweeds show abundance of fucoidans when compared to other seaweeds. The presence of L-fucose and sulphate ester groups in seaweed fucoidans aids to the broad spectrum of biological activities. The research work on the eco-friendly extraction of fucoidans and Isolation using chitosan. Chitosan was proved to be an optimal extractant compared with the conventional methods. Chloride salts of different inorganic cations with the pH 2.0 were used to separate fucoidans from the chitosan mediated extracts. Sodium chloride showed effective separation ability when compared with other salts used. Calcium chloride was considerably efficient when compared to other chloride salts and used as a separation solution. The ideal separation concentration of sodium chloride is 30:1 and it influences the separation of fucoidans from chitosan-fucoidan complex. Increase in separation time has the greater influence and it was found to be directly proportional to the fucoidan content. The results depicted that the ideal and optimum separation was 6 h. The current method is an environment friendly green separation technique, when compared to conventional acid and alkali separation methods. The extraction method is validated and proved to be effective method to derive high yield of sulfated polysaccharides from brown seaweeds.
