Abstract: Competent clinical psychologists are knowledgeable about the development and historical context of the field. To think critically about current theories and orientations, clinicians must have a firm grounding in the psychological roots of psychology as a science and as a helping profession. In this course, students will examine and practice the essential skills of thinking historically.Students will also explore the conceptual foundations of modern psychology by reviewing its historical roots and theoretical perspectives from the time of the Ancient world to the 20 th century.History of psychology courses traditionally focus solely on the "great men" in psychology who were influenced by European ideas about philosophy and science.Students will not only review the contributions of these "forefathers" but also will explore the often overlooked contributions of women and ethnic minorities to history of psychology and the possible reasons for such omissions.
