Anti-Heimat Cinema. The Jewish Invention of the German Landscape
Year: 2021
Type: book-review
Abstract: Because so many books have been written by different authors about Heimat in film, starting with Lotte Eisner’s or Siegfried Kracauer's, one could be forgiven for thinking that there is nothing more to be said. Yet Ofer Ashkenazi’s analysis of Jewish contributions to German Heimat culture adds plenty of new insights and complications. In his book, Ashkenazi testifies to the significant role played by Jewish German filmmakers in the formation of their country’s Heimat culture. For the author, a historian of modern German culture, the book has a deeply personal level as it was written at a time when he and his family moved across the globe to settle in the Middle East....
