Investigating the impact of sexual violence experiences on gender identity in transgender individuals
Year: 2021

Abstract: Transgender individuals have a gender identity that is incongruent with the gender they were assigned at birth. Researchers have acknowledged the differences between cisgender and transgender individuals in their gender identities and life experiences, including their experiences of sexual violence. However, researchers have not described the impact sexual violence has on gender identity in transgender individuals. The proposed study will investigate the impact of sexual violence characteristics on gender identity congruence and acceptance in transgender individuals. Using descriptive statistics and linear regression models, this study will examine the impact of sexual violence characteristics on trauma centrality, and the impact of sexual violence characteristics and trauma centrality on gender identity acceptance and congruence. Results of the descriptive statistics and linear regression models will be discussed in relation to relevant social identity theories.
