No evidence for hybridization in Calanus: Reply to the comment by Parent et al.

Year: 2021
Type: article
Abstract: In a Comment to Choquet et al. (2020), entitled: "Defining what constitutes a reliable dataset to test for hybridization and introgression in marine zooplankton", Parent et al. (2021) expressed concerns about our conclusions, suggesting that (1) the insertion-deletion (InDel) markers used in our studies are not reliable to detect hybrids; (2) previously published InDel data show the presence of one hybrid individual; (3) the lack of geographic overlap between Parent et al.'s and our studies may explain why we did not detect hybrids; (4) genome-wide singlenucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers should be used to investigate the question of hybridization between Calanus finmarchicus and Calanus glacialis; (5) our conclusions may lessen the interest in hybridization in marine pelagic zooplankton. We are thankful to Geneviève J. Parent and her co-authors for raising these different points, as it allows us to explain further in depth the foundation of Choquet et al.'s (2020) conclusions.Hereby, we first provide the background of the discussion and then we aim to address and comment in detail the different points raised by Parent et al. (2021).
