An International Forum: The History of the International Association of School Librarianship
Year: 1996
Type: article
Abstract: The International Association of School Librarianship (IASL) is a professional association that promotes a specialization in library service -- school librarianship -- on an international level. IASL has existed for 25 years, originating from the Word Confederation of Organizations of the Teaching Profession (WCOTP) and growing to its present position in word literacy efforts. This history of the organization, based on interviews and scrutiny of documents in the IASL archives including letters, reports, minutes, and publications, traces its evaluation from a young organization, struggling to create and define itself while promoting international school librarianship, to a formalized organization centred around the professional aspects of school librarianship and achievement of articulated objectives.
