Abstract: I will highlight a few studies that I have found particularly relevant in their approach, reasoning and conclusions. For a more in-depth discussion on the subject, and to go further back in time, I recommend Anne Solomon’s and Jean-Loïc Le Quellec’s chapters in The Oxford Handbook of the Archaeology and Anthropology of Rock Art: respectively ‘Rock Arts, Shamans, and Grand Theories‘ (Solomon 2017) and ‘The Art of Sub-Saharan Africa‘ (Le Quellec 2018).
