Abstract: This study examines the relationship between CEO characteristics and board composition. as well as the relationship between board composition and board roles. Canonical correlation analysis demonstrates strong support for the relationship between CEO characteristics and board composition. No support was found, however, for the relationship between board composition and board roles. While CEOs are associated with the composition of the board, this relationship does not appear to be associated with the board's ability to discharge their service, resource, and control roles.
