Abstract: This article presents the results of the quantitative sociological research which focused on the behaviour of the Czech and Slovak towards environmental problems. The results of the research shows that in both republics the optimistictechnocratic interpretation of the problem prevails.According to the interpretation in favour of atomic energy, scientific and technological development will eliminate all negative aspects induced by the growth of industrial production. The reason behind the unpleasant environmental situation is mostly due to people's indifference. On the other hand and in accordance with the technocratic orientation, the change of morality is considered to be the state's task, thus the real participation in ecological movement and actions is low.The author ends his article with a typological summary of attitudes towards the environmental problem and comments on the differences between the Czech and Slovak opinion.
