Resorcinol/Formaldehyde polymer derived carbon protected CoSe2 nanocubes: A non‐precious, efficient, and durable electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction

Abstract: Composite nanostructured materials are attractive for electrochemical water‐splitting applications. In this work, cube‐shaped nanostructured CoSe2 were synthesized by a template‐assisted method, where Zeolitic Imidazole Framework (ZIF67) was used as a template. Initially, the template was observed with a cube shape, but the structure disintegrated on selenization. The introduction of Resorcinol/Formaldehyde (RF) polymer leads to stabilization of the cube shape and also coated the nanocubes with conductive carbon support. Due to the high surface area of the hollow structure and conductive coating, the CoSe2/C provided an excellent electrocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). CoSe2/C delivered an overpotential of 290 mV with good cycling stability at a current density of 10 mA/cm2 in 1 M KOH aqueous solution, suggesting the possibility of being used as an electrochemical catalyst for oxygen evolution reaction.
