Year: 2021
Type: editorial
Abstract: Bile cast nephropathy (BCN) is characterized by renal dysfunction and hyperbilirubinemia which is caused by the dysfunction of the hepatobiliary system. The pathogenesis of BCN includes renal tubular obstruction by bile casts, direct toxicity of bile acid on the tubular epithelial cells of the kidney, and severe liver dysfunction. The diagnosis of BCN is difficult and the patients may not be easily diagnosed. The treatment of BCN includes decreasing the levels of bile acid and bilirubin, reversal of the cause of hepatic injury, and albumin dialysis.
