Abstract: This paper looks at the evolution of the Kurdish movements in Turkey and Syria. Since the year 2000, the Kurdish movement in Turkey has shifted its objective from creating an independent state to a willingness to work within the existing political system. This spurred Kurdish activists to campaign for constitutional recognition and the decentralization of power within the framework of a social movement. Following the 2011 Syrian uprisings, the Kurdish movement in Syria has prioritized autonomy for the Kurdish people in a united, future Syria. In addition, the Kurdish fight against the Islamic state (Daesh) earned the Syrian Kurds international assistance and legitimacy. I argue that the impact of the Syrian Kurdish struggle has been significant enough to overshadow the social aspects of the Kurdish movement in Turkey.
