Abstract: The brain stimulation methods are rapidly expanding and include those that involve electrical or magnetic stimulation, and other techniques such as pulsed ultrasound that do not directly or initially involve electromagnetism. This talk will provide a high level overview of the current clinical indications for the methods that directly involve electromagnetism. These include electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), transcranial direct or alternating current stimulation (tDCS or tACS), other cranial nerve stimulation, and deep brain stimulation. The talk will summarize current evidence based clinical indications, pointing out commonalities and differences across the methods. With the exception of ECT, all of the methods and clinical indications have emerged during the past 20 years. This is definitely a renaissance time for Brain Stimulation Therapies.
