Abstract: First and foremost I thank Renaat Declerck, my supervisor in Kortrijk. His dedication to description has inspired me from the very outset of my research. Therefore, when this work is written in honour of the many fine example sentences that the English language has provided for this research, this can only be taken to be also an inscription to the powerful linguistic example that he is for me.Because of Renaat's current reputation as an expert of tense and aspect, some linguists may be surprised to find out that he wrote an impressive two-volume dissertation on the verb-particle construction, almost thirty years back.I have derived much benefit from his expertise in this domain.I also appreciate enormously his prompt yet amazingly candid comments on my drafts. Most of all, I am extremely grateful for his endless patience, a gift (I am ashamed to admit) that I have given him ample opportunity to further develop.I owe him a lot.I also thank Joop van der Horst, my co-supervisor in Leuven. He, too, has been a great source of inspiration. From him I learned to revel in linguistic oddities and to rebel against certain linguistic malpractices, such as making things more complex than they really are.I am afraid, though, that he thinks I have gone far too far myself-and therefore not far enough in my rebellion.I am grateful to many colleagues at Kortrijk, Leuven and outside the alma mater for their kindness and moral support.I should mention here at least Griet Beheydt, Bert Cornillie, Barbara Dancygier, Chris De Paepe, Marjan De Smet (for all that chocolate), Eve Sweetser, Jan Tolleneer and his library crew, Sigfried Vanaverbeke, Reinhild Vandekerckhove, Jean-Christophe Verstraete, and Naoaki Wada, among innumerable other wonderful people I feel fortunate to have met.I especially want to single out Susan Reed.
