Abstract: Cancer is a disease that can affect one or several organs, this occurs due to the abnormal growth of cells causing tumor formation, which can spread if left untreated (OMS, 2014). It is a disease which if detected early can save a person, if not; medicine will be used to ease the pain until their final days. Medical treatments include chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery. Coping is a process in which the individual determines the type of meaning that they will give to a stressful situation and therefore the manner in which they will deal with it (Soriano, 2002). \nThe purpose of this research was to determine whether the gender of the people hospitalized in the Hospital Solon Ayala Espinosa, Solca Núcleo de Quito, can be a variable when analyzing the type of coping strategy being used. Cuestionario de Afrontamiento Ante el Dolor Crónico created by José Soriano and Vicente Monsalve, in 2002, was the questionnaire administered to 15 men and 15 women for two weeks. The analysis was performed by application of a T-2 Sample for each of the strategies and it showed that there is no significantly statistical difference. This implies that gender is not a relevant variable in the way that people cope with the disease. Even so, it was possible to analyze what were the most common strategies used to cope by these patients, as well as the type of psychological needs are these patients considers need the most.
