Abstract: Iillll[l[ll!llllllll!lu' ffUb7ijD A wind-tunnel characteristics of EXJMMARY investigation hasbeencarried an external-flow jet -au@nented outto determine the slotted tlapwhich appears suitable forapplication to airplanes withpod-mounted jet engines.Theinvestigation included testsof an unswept wingandof a .modelof a swept-wing jettransport or bcmiber.Compressed airjets exhausting fromnozzles attached to thelowersurface of thewingswere usedto simulate thejetsfrompod-mounted jetengines.9Theexternal-flow jet-aqnted flapproduced values of circulation liftlargeenough towarrant serious consideration of itsusefor increasing themaximum liftcoefficients of airplanes withpod-maunted jetengines.Theresults indicated thatstatic longitudinal stability andtrtiup to a liftcoefficient of at least6 could be achieved witha jettransport arbomber airplane eqyipped witha jet-augm=nted flapand hating a horizontal-tail areaequalto 25 percent of thewingarea. In order to achieve thisresult, itwasnecessary to locate thehorizontal tailin a position wellabovethech~rd planeof thewingandto incorporate bothvariable tailincidence sd an elevator.Theresults indicatedthatan external-flow jet-a-nted flapapplied to existing Jet transport andbomber airplanes withpod-mounted engines wouldproduce liftcoefficients of about3 fortake-off (thrust-weight ratioof 0.25) -andliftcoefficients of about5 forlanding (thrust-weight ratioof 0.40).Theseliftcoefficients wouldprotide substantial reductions in take-off andI_sding speeds anddistances.
