Yugoslav Wars: The 'Revenge of the Countryside' Between Sociological Reality and Nationalist Myth
Year: 1999
Type: article
Abstract: In the 1990s, the Yugoslav wars have been interpreted by some authors as a "revenge of the countryside" against urban culture. Such an interpretation draws on theories developed by Serbian geographer Jovan Cvijic and the Croatian sociologist Dinko Tomasic, but leads to a mistaken ethnicization of social and cultural divides and a misunderstanding of the relationship between violence and modernization, as shown by a closer look at the historical links existing in the Serbian case between banditry and state violence.
