Paradigm Shift: Preliminary Clinical Categorization of Ultrahigh Risk for Childhood Bipolar Disorder to Facilitate Studies on Prevention

Year: 2013
Type: article
Abstract: Article AbstractAccording to the authors, the very considerable morbidity and dysfunction associated with childhood-onset bipolar illness make early identification and treatment a very high but elusive priority. There are few studies identifying optimal treatment for children with bipolar I disorder, and treatment options for children with bipolar II disorder and bipolar disorder not otherwise specified are rare. The authors suggest that children at high and ultrahigh risk for childhood-onset bipolar disorder can be identified on clinical grounds and that practical clinical trials with large populations, similar to those studying cancer therapies, could be implemented at low cost.
