Abstract: This paper introduces the concept of a high bit rate burst type communications system as a means of increasing the communications throughput on LEO spacecraft. The discussion concerns the use of optical frequencies due to the decrease in size, weight and prime power of LEO satellite communication packages at these wavelengths. The penalty is an increase in pointing and tracking complexity. An example link design is presented.
