Loss of neuronal ERα abolishes sexual and aggressive behaviors in male mice

Abstract: The estrogen receptor a knockout mice (aERKO) underscores the importance of ERa. expression in the regulation of social behaviors by estrogen. We investigate the neuronal contribution to both social and nonsocial behaviors by using male mice in which the ERa gene is deleted solely in neurons. Overall, these mice showed similar behavioral changes as those previously reported in aERKO mice. Both sex and aggressive behaviors were completely abolished in these mice. ERa deficient mice also tended to show higher levels of locomotor activity measured in open field test and tended to be heavier than wild-type control mice. These findings suggest that neuronal ERa may playa major role in the regulation of male social behaviors.
