Travail social et pratiques discrétionnaires. Introduction

Type: article
Abstract: Based on a field report of an exchange between the ethnographer and a resident of the Villeneuve district of Grenoble, this article raises the ambivalent reactions to the potentially undesirable figure of the interviewer. The particular context of this neighbourhood, between urban renovation and repeated surveys, influences and predisposes the perception of this presence that comes to disturb and disrupt the ordinary course of life. Through the notions of habituation to environments, disorder and avoidance, the author explores the negative affects that can be generated by the interactions between investigators and inhabitants. The article shows that the conjunction between past events, present anxiety and the anticipation of what could happen generates a hypervigilance of the inhabitants with regard to the ambiences of their living space. For these inhabitants on the alert, there is always the possibility that the desired atmosphere is suddenly tinged with something unpleasant, and these negative affects disturb both the interactional order and the ordinary conduct of activities.
