Abstract: The topic of craft expertise in building and its relation to knowledge, here presented in case studies from China, Japan and France, is a sorely neglected theme in the history of technology.Things are somewhat different for the pre-industrial era, where studying the craft and science of building and the interactions between the heterogeneous skills of the building site has proved extremely fruitful, opening up radical and influential new ways of thinking about how knowledge is made, transmitted, valued and credited.1 But when it comes to the modern age, historians of technology have perhaps too easily accepted the common assumption that industrialization marks a rupture, that industrial technology displaces craft technique and renders it irrelevant as societies modernize, and that the two modes of practice and regimes of knowledge-making are distinct and incompatible rather than entwined and mutually defining.
