Abstract: [The social democratic social order] In this exploratory article, Klas Åmark examines different ways of identifying and analyzing the social democratic social order in Sweden. The theoretical inspiration comes mainly from Max Weber and his discussions about the legitimate order. The social order is mainly about the relationships between society and individuals. It is found not least in hidden texts in, for example, social insurance and collective agreements and in the unwritten laws of politics. Here we find the perception that the adult, productive man is the norm while young people, women and older workers are expected to have lower wages but also pay lower fees to the unions. The unwritten laws of politics are examined with the help of speeches and interviews by some Swedish Social Democratic Party leaders. Per Albin Hansson often demanded loyalty to the coalition government during World War II, Tage Erlander often wrote nasty comments in his diaries about incompetent politicians and public officials, while Vingåker’s Machiavelli, Göran Persson could sound like an initiated spin doctor.
