Target Localization in Movement Disorders Surgery

Year: 2003
Type: book-chapter
Abstract: The success of a stereotactic neurosurgical procedure is influenced by a number of factors. Proper patient selection is important in order to avoid treating patients unlikely to benefit from the procedure. Careful preoperative evaluation should identify factors that may result in avoidable complications or a difficult postoperative course. When surgery is deemed appropriate, the choice of anatomic target and method of treatment (lesion vs deep brain stimulation [DBS]) are the next major determinants of outcome.
