Land Use Change and Health

Year: 2022
Type: book-chapter
Abstract: In this chapter, we introduce a conceptual framework that identifies typologies of land use/land cover change and population dynamics connected with human health. We draw upon the preponderance of empirical and theoretical work related to vector-borne and zoonotic diseases as well as land change science to discuss how population-land typologies influence non-zoonotic communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases, and accidents and injuries. Given that population-land typologies have generally not been conceptualized in these health contexts, we present an abundance of research and case studies to demonstrate the linkages. We present these linkages as functions of the proximate determinants of land use change: agricultural expansion and intensification, infrastructure expansion, and resource extraction. We conclude with a call for increased inter- and trans-disciplinary collaboration to improve understanding of complex environmental health challenges and develop stronger policies for sustainable development.
