Abstract: The 5th volume of Biochemical Actions o f Hormones continues an excellent scries devoted to fundamental endocrinology.5 of the 11 contributions to this book discuss the current status of our understanding of steroid receptors and steroid hormone action. One of these reports on an intestinal receptor system for 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin D, a newer member of the steroid hormones which is thought to be the hormonally active form of vitamin D.The remaining six papers deal with topics as varied as hormonal control of spermato genesis and modifications of chromatin structure by hormones. An intriguing contribution by F.R. Butcher concerns the regulation of cxocytosis.an interesting and rather rarely discussed aspect of hormone action and secretion. Two papers discuss the chemical and biological properties of the somatomedins and the epidermal growth factors. Finally, there is an interesting contribution on multihormonal control of messenger RNA for a hepatic protein. This paper focusses on genetic mechanisms underlying Ihe hormonal control of the synthesis of a specific protein and alterations of these mechanisms in neoplastic cells showing a different pattern of cellular proteins being synthesized. This book covers a number of very interesting aspects of modern endocrinology. It is well edited and can be highly recommended as a valuable reference book to endocrinolo gists and others interested in hormone action in general.A.
