Phagocytosis

Year: 2020
Type: book-chapter
Abstract: Phagocytosis is the process by which particles (including fibrin aggregates, tissue debris, dead cells, and bacteria) are bound and ingested by specialized cells, primarily neutrophils and macrophages. The former are blood-borne, migratory cells; the latter cell type is present in the body as both wandering and immobile cells and with monocytes forms the mononuclear phagocyte system [1] . Recognition of particles by phagocytic cells is facilitated by humoral factors (opsonins), which bind to particles and promote their uptake [2] . Immunoglobulins and some complement components are known to have opsonic activity for a wide spectrum of antigenic particles. Recently, an a2-globulin from plasma has been implicated in the clearance of particles from the circulation, and this protein has been identified as fibronectin [ 3-5 ].
