Abstract: GIS is recognized as very powerful tool in many aspects. However, its application within education system is still problematic, due to many obstacles, which are in particular present in less economically developed countries. This paper is focused on introduction of innovative concept of GIS education within geography classes in primary and secondary schools. Existing theoretical base is used to emphasize multiple benefits of geoinformation technology application in education, in particular from geographic perspective. Under this concept, GIS is considered as natural partner to geography, where it is not viewed only as a tool, but also a methodological foundation of contemporary geographic science. In the didactic context, GIS can be used in education as a teaching aid, method, or content. Optimal pedagogical and practical framework for successful implementation is yet to be found.
