Abstract: Oil still remains the chief fuel in the global energy matrix, although studies of renowned research centers predicted that the peak production and depletion of global reserves to be close, in the beginning of this new century. Thus, 21st Century raised large front debate about the growing demands of fossil fuels. The recent discoveries of huge oil deposits in the South Atlantic aroused the interest of the great powers, especially the USA and China, at the same time dynamic securitization of this source of energy are developed on both sides of the South Atlantic. This study aims at identifying the resulting consequences of the discoveries in the early twenty-first century, of those enormous deposits of oil in the South Atlantic; in particular concerning the relationship between the USA and China; which initiatives and actions that both states have taken; and analyse the role of this region in the dawn of the new century. However, for the analysis of this study we used the Theory of Regional Security Complex of the Copenhagen School. It is worth noticing that the South Atlantic has gained new relevance in this century, not only due to the early discovered deposits, but also to the change of maritime oil flows as well as by China's presence in this ocean, that used to be a zone of exclusive influence of the USA and its European partners.
