Abstract: Given the widespread impact of hepatic disease on other organs including the kidney, lungs, and the immune and central nervous systems, it’s been interesting that the heart is rarely mentioned. A study in this month’s issue of the Journal of Hepatology by Maruyama et al. identifies a common effect of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection on myocardial function that is reversible following viral eradication. Unlike the effect on other organs, however, this cardiac connection does not reflect a consequence of advanced liver disease but rather a direct result of HCV infection.
