Abstract: Technological innovation is an essential driver of human and economic development. It can improve the functioning of markets (Jensen, 2007), promote government accountability (Callen and Long, 2014), build human capital (Foster and Rosenzweig, 1996), and reduce the risks we face from global environmental change (Dar et al., 2013). Yet designing technologies that improve the lives of the poor is notoriously challenging. The path from ideation to scale-up is rarely linear, or even successful.
