Abstract: Editors' Noteand Jannedy illustrate the contextual and ethnographic specificity of the social meanings constituted through linguistic variation.They take this insight a step further by adding in a gestural layer of variation, showing that gestures reveal robust patterns of co-occurrence with intonation and with other aspects of discourse structure.Their article represents the first multimodal analysis the journal has published, and as editors, we are excited to be able to bring to readers this innovative approach.
