Abstract: Bromide ion readily replaces the terminal chloride ligands of dichloro-μ-tetrapropionatodirhenium (III), Re2 (C2H5CO2)4 Cl2. The reaction occurs in steps; at sufficiently low concentrations of bromide, the first substitution occurs with little interference from the second. At 25° in acetonitrile, the stepwise equilibrium constants are 0.011 ± 0.001 and 0.004 ± 0.002. Attempts to study the kinetics of some of these reactions have been thwarted by the presence of reactive impurities; these impurities are discussed with a view to their possible identity and removal.
