Abstract: Potential biotechnological approaches for increasing the specific activity of cellulases in degrading crystalline cellulose are discussed, including; the optimization of mixtures of pure enzymes from different organisms; mutagenesis of microorganisms carrying a cloned cellulase gene and enzyme engineering using site directed mutagenesis.
