Abstract: Since Red Book was first published in 1938, updated editions of this classic reference have been issued by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) approximately every 3 years. Although Red Book is assembled and overseen by the Committee on Infectious Diseases of the AAP, >300 authors from academia, industry, government, and nonpediatric disciplines have contributed to the most recent edition. The editors have achieved a near seamless uniformity of style and format, despite the diversity of collaborators. The purpose of Red Book is “to provide a composite summary of current AAP recommendations concerning infectious diseases in and immunizations for infants, children and adolescents” (p. xviii) with information that was current as of January 2006. It is not a standard textbook, as underscored by the paucity of references and the lack of illustrations, although numerous useful tables are found throughout the text. Molecular details of microbial physiology, pathogenesis, and host responses are typically provided only when essential for the reader to apply the recommendations to the clinical context.
