Abstract: This book essentially contains the personal experience of its editor, Dr. Yamada. The first chapter, which makes up half of the book, is written by Dr. Yamada himself and presents his personal concepts and his experience in the treatment of arteriovenous malformations (AVM) in functional areas of the brain. The chapter is illustrated by excellent figures and well-detailed cases are presented.Particular emphasis is put on the surgical technique. The main point of Dr. Yamada is that the major breakthrough in mortality and morbidity in surgery of AVMs results from the interruption only of communicating venules and shunting arterioles.Chapter 2, also written by Dr. Yamada as first author, gives good practical advice for the postoperative care.Chapter 3, still written by the team of Dr. Yamada, contains five sections detailing their experience with various methods allowing to study the cerebral blood flow in an AVM.Chapter 4 provides instructions for the anaesthesia and particularly controlled hypotension.Chapter 5 briefly summarizes the experience of Dr. Girvin in similar malformations.Chapter 6 presents the technique for surgical treatment of cavernous malformations of the brainstem by the team of Dr. Spetzler. This is a good chapter but it has already been published in other textbooks.Chapters 7 and 8 are interesting, dealing with the radiosurgery of AVMs with helium ion Bragg peak radiation or the gamma knife.Chapter 9 presents a mathematical model of hemodynamic perturbations in AVMs.Chapter 10, consisting of 4 sections with Dr. Yamada as first author, details various functional investigations. The molecular basis of vasculogenesis and angiogenesis is briefly reviewed in chapter 11.As a neurosurgeon, I was mostly interested in the first chapter where the editor shares his personal, impressive, surgical experience.Overall it should be underlined that this book conveys mainly the personal experience of one single group. It should be of interest for surgical teams specialized in the treatment of this challenging pathology. The price of the book, USD 145.00, is reasonable, taking into account the high quality of the figures.
