Abstract: The Editorial Office of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (MRM) announces changes to the Author Instructions for manuscript submissions to MRM. These changes have been implemented to improve the overall quality of the journal. Topics affected by these guideline changes include manuscript length, references, and the use of acronyms. Manuscript length requirements will be set by number of words rather than page limit to facilitate author submission. The word count of the body of the manuscript should be included on the title page. The Author Instructions limitation on the number of reference citations has now been changed to a guideline. The diversity of topics in magnetic resonance has lead many authors to suggest the need for greater flexibility in citations to support their work. Authors may exceed this guideline if it is necessary to include additional references to provide complete citation of the work. In addition, authors may cite abstracts in their reference section; however, the published version of the work supersedes the abstract except in cases in which the original abstract contains unique information not found in the final manuscript. Authors should avoid citations of the abstract and the reviewed manuscript for the same work. Be advised that abstract citation is not credited for the calculation of the journal's impact factor. Finally, MRM discourages the use of unnecessary acronyms. In recent years, there has been an explosion of weakly conceived and confusing acronyms in our field. In many cases they represent slight modifications of other published work, which can assume unwarranted credit for prior art. MRM will continue to allow new acronyms for unique and important contributions; however, it will be our policy to reduce expansion of acronyms that result in weakening clarity. A list of commonly used acronyms can be found in the MRM Style Guide. Please make note of these changes when submitting future manuscripts to Magnetic Resonance in Medicine. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the Editorial Office.
