Abstract: In books 10-12 of the Dionysiaca Nonnus of Panopolis composes his myth of the satyr Ampelus who - after his death and metamorphosis into the vine - accompanies the wine-god Dionysus throughout the subsequent events. The episode is a turning point within the Dionysiac epic and sheds light on the poetical dialogue with literary traditions conducted by Hellenic societies of the late antique Eastern Mediterranean.
