Abstract: Between 1988 and 1990 a series of workshops was held at RERF to discuss future directions of the RERF research programs. Specific recommendations were made in such areas as radiation sensitivity, immunology, radiation carcinogenesis and aging. An. institution-wide review is now under way to determine long-term future research plans at RERF on the basis of the recommendations from the workshops. The formulation of any new major research programs will depend on the decisions made during this review. However, there are several important areas in which the need for future studies is clearly indicated. One of the major responsibilities of the departments of Epidemiology and Statistics will be the continuation of the follow-up of the Life Span Study cohort and updating of risk assessment. The magnitude of cancer risk among the A-bomb survivors who were exposed at young ages and the nature of temporal changes in cancer risk associated with radiation exposure are of special interest. Mortality-based surveillance will continue. However, recent progress in the tumor and tissue registries provides a new perspective for cancer risk assessment as will be evident in an upcoming report. Furthermore, recent analyses of data from the Adult Health Study (AHS) demonstrate the usefulness of the AHS clinical and laboratory data in longitudinal analytical studies, especially relating to non-cancer morbidity endpoints which are not available from the tumor registries. Collaborative efforts of the departments of Clinical Studies, Epidemiology and Statistics are needed to develop and establish methods for analyzing the AHS data for radiation epidemiologie studies.
