Abstract: This protocol is designed to extract metabolites from microbial cells collected on polycarbonate filters for profile analysis of small-molecular-weight, water-soluble metabolites. Labeled internal standard metabolites (I.S.) are added to the extraction process in order to quantify cognate metabolites in the biological samples and to help monitor and normalize variation observed between separate mass spectrometry runs.
