Abstract: altering membrane fatty acid composition".This study is of interest because it suggests a relation between dietary fat intake and blood pressure which acts via changes in the physicochemical properties of the cell membrane. In the second study, Norris et al.5 gave 16 patients with mild essential hypertension a dietary supplement with the fish oil Max EPA, which is rich in W3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, eicosapentanoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid. They found a significant reduction in blood pressure in these patients. The mechanism here is probably due to an effect on platelet prostaglandin metabolism.Although both these studies were small, they are of some importance as dietary factors are likely to become more important in the future management of hypertensive patients.
