Abstract: The Treaty of Lisbon changed the European system of fundamental rights. Using freedom of assembly to exemplify this, Stefan Ripke analyzes the effects of the Charter of Fundamental Rights on the system for the protection of fundamental rights in the European Union. He identifies the existence and at the same time the range of a guarantee of freedom of assembly by the European Union Treaty, the Charter of Fundamental Rights and the European Convention on Human Rights.
