Abstract: Acute ozone inhalation impairs pulmonary function and induces airway inflammation in young adults. To assess whether these effects also occur in older adults, Arjomandi et al (Am J Respir Crit Care Med 2017; https://doi.org/10.1164/rccm.201708-1613OC) examined the respiratory effects of exposure to ambient levels of ozone in healthy adults aged 55 to 70 years without a history of smoking in a cross-over, controlled exposure study. Eighty-seven subjects received 3-hour exposures with intermittent moderate exercise to filtered air containing 0, 70, or 120 ppb of ozone in random order separated by at least 2 weeks.
