Erratum: The distances of less-evolved planetary nebulae: a further test of statistical distance scales
Year: 2005
Type: erratum
Abstract: The paper ‘The distances of less-evolved planetary nebulae: a further test of statistical distance scales’ was published in Mon. Not. R. Astron. Soc. 362, 847-856 (2005). Certain corrections to the paper were not included, and this may confuse readers; this erratum serves to clarify these cases. In the right-hand column of p. 848, the fourth paragraph down should read ‘Where TZ(He ii) ≃TEFF, then it follows that constraints upon TEFF translate into similar restrictions upon TZ(He II). It also follows that values of TZ(He II) may be used in assessing BCs.’ The last paragraph before Section 2.1 should read ‘Whilst neither of these analyses are completely secure, it will nevertheless become clear that τLYC is larger where TZ(He ii) < 65 kK, and decreases rapidly to larger values of TZ.’ Finally, the references in the abstract were changed from those in the original text. The entire abstract should read as follows. ‘It has recently been pointed out that a number of the methods used to determine planetary nebulae (PNe) distances may be appreciably in error (Phillips 2004a). Whilst the scales of Zhang (1995), Bensby & Lundstrom (2001) and others are appropriate for higher radio brightness temperatures TB, those of Phillips (2002a) and Daub (1982) are more relevant where TB is small. We note, in the following, that the absolute bolometric magnitudes of less-evolved PNe are likely to be similar. The mean value of MBOL> can therefore be used to constrain PNe distances D, and confirm the distance scales for higher TB outflows. We have used this procedure to evaluate distances to a further 47 PNe, and we find that the mean values of D are consistent with those of Cahn, Kaler & Stanghellini (1992), Zhang (1995), Phillips (2004a) and van de Steene & Zijlstra (1995). They are, as expected, inconsistent with the lower TB scale of Phillips (2002a).’
