Abstract: Somatic-cell genetics is now beginning to fulfill its promise as a power ful tool for the formulation of a human gene map. This approach has contributed to knowledge of complementation groups, syntenic associa tions, assignments of genes to chromosomes, and recently the regional localization of genetic markers. Moreover, these new data have proven exceptionally useful to those investigators who have employed kindred analysis for the purpose of genetic mapping. The combination of the two methods has been particularly productive.Increasingly, more investigators are contributing to human gene mapping using cell genetics and family studies. As demonstrated by this report, the acquisition of new data has been rapid-and promises to become explosive. In any new field where information and concepts are accumulating and changing rapidly, it is important to regularly evaluate progress and chart new directions of advance. That is the purpose of these annual meetings and published reports. It is our aim to review progress on human gene mapping on a yearly basis. This will permit us to confirm valid gene assignments and identify others which require confirmation or * In text, this report should be referred to as: New Haven Conference (1973).In references, this report should be listed as: New Haven Conference (1973):
