Abstract: This experiment was carried out to examine the relation between the water vapor absorption and the modification of collagen fibers.Blocking of side-chain by the normal modified reagents, i. e., deamination, bromo acetate-treatment, N-acetylation and methylation, increased the ability of water vapor absorption, but in the case of tanning reagent, i. e., formaldehyde, vegetable tannin and chrome complex, modified collagen fibers decreased the ability of water vapor absorption. It would be estimated to depend on the formation of cross linkage between peptide chains in collagen fibers. The wool requires water vapor absorption-release time of as long as 4 days, whereas the collagen fiber, even though the water content is about twice as much, needs only 18 hours. In general, the animal fibers (wool, silk and collagen) have great ability of water vapor absorption and espesially collagen fibers have an excellent water vapor absorption-release performance.
