Abstract: The conquest of Oran in 1732 is one of the great moments of a controversial reign like that of Philip V of Spain and as a military affair, it has traditionally received the attention of historians. Although interesting studies on Early Modern Oran’s society have appeared recently, there is however little recent research on the defence of Oran after 1732. This paper aims to shed light on this context, emphasizing another little-known aspect: the relationship with the local population inside and outside the Spanish stronghold. For this purpose, the testimonies of first-hand witnesses such as Governor José Vallejo or the military engineers who served in Oran during this period have been consulted.
