Can one health achieve the target of end TB strategy: perspective from zoonotic TB prevention and control in India

Year: 2022
Type: article
Abstract: The problem of zoonotic tuberculosis (zTB) is multifaceted, including an economic loss to productivity; however, the accurate burden is not yet estimated in countries like India. While immense research has been undertaken on human TB, animal TB and its interaction with humans are not adequately addressed, that is one of the missing challenges failing to consider the importance of zTB in humans in the current National Tuberculosis Elimination Program (NTEP) program. India has aimed the TB elimination by 2025, it is important to address the missing link of zTB in humans. As the health of all species (humans, animals, and the environment) are interconnected so extensively, efforts to ensure engagement with all are required to meet the TB target. In such a scenario, the One Health (OH) approach is clearly warranted in developing cooperation of various One Health players at the interface of the human-animal-environment. Therefore, this short communication aims to provide One Health strategies to achieve TB elimination by 2025 through global evidence synthesis and landscape its integration to the current national health program in the Indian context.
